Vivien Thomas Prize JSCR is proud to announce the Vivien Thomas Prize for best case report written by a medical student and the Vivien Thomas Prize for best case report written by a doctor. Denied a chance to become a doctor by the Great Depression, and initially denied the recognition he deserved for his work by old racial prejudices, Vivien Thomas proved that genius, persistence and ability can transcend artificially imposed restraints. Vivien Thomas, an African-American, became a cardiac surgery pioneer and a teacher of operative techniques to many of the world's most prominent surgeons. It is this drive and passion for surgical knowledge, excellence and innovation that powers Journal of Surgical Case Reports (JSCR). We have great pleasure in announcing JSCR’s first annual prize awards dedicated to this inspirational figure. All case reports submitted by 30^th June 2012 for publication in the Journal will be considered for the prizes. This will include any case already accepted for publication. The winners of The Vivien Thomas Prize for best case report written by a medical student and The Vivien Thomas Prize for best case report written by a doctor will be announced Autumn 2012. Author Katie McCabe published a beautifully written article in 1989, which truly captures the power of Dr Vivien Thomas’ story.
